Default Retreiving Dropped Rocker Shim

Did you know that a rocker shim can drop into the head oil drains near the head bolts? I did not.

Anyway I figure everyone will tell me I need to pull the head, but I'm hoping that someone might have a trick.

The shim in question appears to have gone down the #8 intake side oil drain...motor is in the car, I cannot actually see the shim but i didn't hear it drop into the block, it is just gone.

Can't get any magnets to fit, was unable to suck it out with a shopvac.

Could you get a 5mm(.197") diameter magnet in there?

When you tried the shopvac, did you duct-tape a drinking straw on the end of the vacuum?
I'm not even sure that a straw would fit, but if so, you may be able to slide that in and recover the piece.
Is it possible that a shim was never installed on #8?

That sucks! I feel for ya man. Hate it when **** like that happens. Maybe it's still in the area around the lifter trays, but could also be that it slid down the wall beside the tray & into the block then pan.

Hope the tiny magnet or straw ideas work. Good-luck. Let us know what you end up doing.

Thanks for the links 99blu. I can't fit an 8mm in there, I will buy the one you sent.

I didn't use a drinking straw, but I did try some flexible vinyl tubing.

Yeah, stupid shim was teetering on the head bolt and as soon as i got my hand to it 8 brushed it back into the drain...I've had the things on and off 10 or more times and never even considered it being a possibility...oh well.

I am going to pull the head though, don't want to risk knocking it into the pan by trying to screw around in there blind.

Thanks for the tips guys.

She was sitting pretty right against the #8 intake lifter, thank god for ARP hardware and reusable gaskets.
