My friend just bought an old chevy II with a carburated 5.3. He was driving when he started hearing a noise like an old style fan belt slipping. He knew the alternator was new, so he took the serpentine belt off, cranked it up and noise is still there. It doesn't go away, but doesn't seem to get faster or slower with rpm.
Again, this is with no accessories hooked up.
Any ideas?

Check your pulleys... I know it's a pretty common problem on the 93-02 vehicles... Might be the same thing there.
Sometimes you can regrease them, other times they'll need to be replaced if in bad enough shape.

Fixed orfice type PCV whistles on these with a carb for some reason, old school type PCV valve no noises.Late style valve covers with no valve provision have the orfice built into the valve cover.
