Default Need Help...high pitch squeal coming from engine.

My friend just bought an old chevy II with a carburated 5.3. He was driving when he started hearing a noise like an old style fan belt slipping. He knew the alternator was new, so he took the serpentine belt off, cranked it up and noise is still there. It doesn't go away, but doesn't seem to get faster or slower with rpm.

Again, this is with no accessories hooked up.

Any ideas?

Tough call w/ no video, but it's usually a rod bearing spun. Pull the dipstick while running and look for glitter.

Hmm, I'll tell him to check. He said it has good oil pressure and isn't knocking or rattling. Did say it sounded like it was towards the front of the engine.

Check your pulleys... I know it's a pretty common problem on the 93-02 vehicles... Might be the same thing there.

Sometimes you can regrease them, other times they'll need to be replaced if in bad enough shape.

And sometimes you can read the original post:

Not much pulley noise to be had w/ no belt spinning the pulleys...

Just wanted to update in case it helps anyone else.

It was the lack of a PCV valve. Imagine that lol. Put one in line between the valve cover and carb base and problem solved.

Fixed orfice type PCV whistles on these with a carb for some reason, old school type PCV valve no noises.Late style valve covers with no valve provision have the orfice built into the valve cover.
