Unless you live in fairbanks or someplace in Saudi Arabia I would just stick with the manual says. After all GM did design the motor they know what it needs. lol contrary to what some experts believe.
i thought everyone in this forum was an expert! Lol some of the **** people say in here is whimsical, uneducated and just terrible advice to an entry level guest. If you don't know what you're talking about just read and learn please and stop pretending you're a master tech! Everyone is a mechanic! Or atleast wants to be. We got one guy saying that 5w30 is thicker than 10w30. Doesn't work that way folks. Anyways it doesn't matter what compression you bumped your LS engine up to or how big you're cam is or what roller rockers you're running! It's the size of the oil galleys and yes, modern engines have tighter tolerances and smaller oil circuits so in order to deliver proper lubrication throughout you stick with the recommended weight on the fill cap. The guys at GM DID ALL the R&D for us so we don't need to alter that in any way. Hi performance mods and hi mileage DO NOT mean thicker oil at all. Trust me
