Default milling 317 heads...

I picked up a high mileage lq4 over the weekend.. plans are a rering, asa cam, or maybe a .550ish lift howards cam, z06 valve springs, and mill the 317's to bump up compression...

a friend of mine just bought a head surfacing machine and told me to bring him the heads and he would cut them down for me...

I told him to cut .030 off of them.. whats the most you can expect to cut off the 317's and be safe with a .550 lift cam using the stock mls head gaskets.. also not have any intake mounting issues.

thanks.

well has he ever done milling? make a test cut, measure the depth.. then aim for the CC..

not sure about how far you can go with milling, try a quick search.. But I know not to go too far because of valve shrouding...

He had an older surfacing machine, he sold it and has acquired a newer machine that hes never used.. hes going to cut a set of his own heads prior to cutting mine.. he didnt act too worried about it..

Me and him both have been toolmaker/mo;dmaker for 25yrs.. I have a bridgeport myself, just dont have a large facemill or fixturing for heads and my mill could use spindle bearings before I use a facemill that large.
