ok, i'm getting ready to pull off my balancer, and have a question...

I got a nice 3 arm puller from Advanced, and want to make sure i'm doing this right!

with the crank bolt loosened, but in...i install the puller, and start the screw turning against the head of the crank bolt? loosening the crank bolt as i go?

that sound about right?
All help would be greatly appreciated!

 

Yeah thats pretty much it, just thread the bolt in about 2 turns and start turning the puller. If the pulley bottoms out against the bolt and doesn't come off the crank snout you can just put a 3 inch 1/2inch extension into the crank bolt hole and finishing pulling off of it. Good luck.

 

That's right except you are going to reach a point where the crank bolt is backed out all the way and the pulley is still not off. Also, when the crank bolt is only screwed in 1 or 2 threads, you are putting a lot of pressure on those threads in the crank.

 

I have the extended crank bolt from ATI...should I just use that to be safe?

If you want to save the pointed tip on the puller use a piece of soft metal between the crank bolt head and the puller bolt.

 

if you have a longer bolt available use it it could save your threads

BTW,
can the jaws go on the inner portion of the pulley if necessary (if they won't for some reason grip arount the outside of it?)

 

There are knotches on the inside of the balancer where the 3 jaw catches. Put the jaws to the inside and insert it through the inside of the balancer and then turn it until the jaws catch the notches and go to work on it. It will be tough at first.

 

About the pointed thing on the puller, if you are into taking care of your tools and tools you borrow, it will making borrowing tools in the future easier.

 

ive never been into the borrowing thing...i figure if i need it once I'll probably need it again at some point whether its helping a friend or whatever so i always end up buying the tools...i bought mine and just grinded down the tip to make things easier on myself

 

you NEED them to go on the inner portion...I bought probably thee biggest pulley puller pep boys sells and it still fit in there just fine...a good fine thread puller is your best bet too as this will make it much easier and with less chance of breaking something...if you try to put it on the outside you can easily damage the pulley. Get under the car and look around the backside of the pulley and you can see the 3 tabs each hook goes onto.

tech saves me again...I was thinking that may f up the pulley if i tried to do it on the outside....good to know. Hopefully things go smoothly! I am trying to finish up this blower install, and have been hung up on parts for 2 weeks now!

 

take a look at some of the writups on jmx's site www.ls1howto.com he shows how to change pulley's on there thats where i learned it.
