Default valve train noise after head/cam install

I did my head and cam swap this last weekend and now I have a lot of "ticking". I can definitely hear the "ticking" when I drive (hear noise down by the fender). My dad thinks it’s just a result of all the hardened parts inside and the double roller chain. Does all this seem normal?

What I installed are as follows:

TR224/224 112

Ported heads
- 2.08/1.60 stainless valves
- Comp Cams duel springs (inner and outer)
- Titanium Retainers
- milled 0.020"
- Compression at 11.1:1

Comp Cams 7.400" chrome molly pushrods

Rolermaster double timing chain

When I first cranked the engine it really "ticked" but about 10 mins into the breakin, much of the noise went away thus leading me to believe that the lifters had just not pumped up yet.

I clayed for piston-to-valve clearance when assembling and have over 0.100" on the intake and exhaust. This leads me to feel confident that there is no problem there.

As I understand it, the TR cam has a 0.030" smaller base circle and combined with my 0.020" milled heads, the pushrods should only be short by 0.010" (well within the ability of the lifters to make up).

I torqued the lifters 3 times on install. Could they still be loose?

I have read a lot of posts on here and it seems common to pick up "ticking" with all the hardened stuff.

Thanks everyone,

Chris

P.S. on an upside...DAMNNN this thing lumps nice...even at factory 800 RPM it was good...its even better down at 650 RPM

Those 7.40" pushrods certainly would be the right length with your combo. You know, that cam you have has very fast ramps. I don't think you will get rid of the valvetrain noise. It's just the nature of the beast.

How did you get 11.1 to 1 CR with .020" milled from the heads? Must be 5.3 liter heads...right?
5.7 liter heads won't get you close to that CR.
