Default New to the realm and need some advice

As you probably already figured out I have an 02 WS-6. What would be a good cam to get that will run on stock internals and still get decent HP? Just looking for something to start with. Don't want to go too radical yet!!!!! <img border="0" alt="[driving]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_driving3.gif" />

Some popular starter cams are the TR220, the LS1 Hotcam, and the 02 LS6 cam. The LS6 cam and TR220 will have a near stock idle, whereas the Hotcam has a really lopey idle. There is a difference between the 01 LS6 cam and the 02 one, so if you do go that route, make sure you get the 02 version.

All 3 cams will work okay without custom tuning, but if you get tuning, you will get even better numbers with custom PCM tuning.

All 3 cams will work okay with unported heads, although you will need to upgrade the springs for any of these 3 cams. The LS1 Hotcam includes the springs when you buy the cam. The LS6 cam and TR220 cams dont include springs.

In order of cost, the LS6 cam is the cheapest, although after buying the springs, will cost about the same as the Hotcam which includes the springs. The LS6 cam also requires new shorter pushrods, whereas the other two will work fine with the stock length pushrods.

The TR220 will be the most expensive of the 3 setups, but will give the best numbers of the 3.

If you have an A4 (automatic), I would recommend against the Hotcam. It will work, but without custom programming you may have some idling issues due to the rough idle...however some people have gotten it to work.

You will ALWAYS need to replace the valve springs when going from the stock cam to any other cam. As mentioned before, the LS6 cam is the only one that requires new pushrods, but its a good idea to replace them anyway, especially if you have an M6 (manual transmission).

Alot of people also recommend replacing the stock timing chain when replacing a cam, even with a smaller one like the ones I mentioned.

Theres plenty of other choices out there, its just that these 3 are very popular and you will find alot of people with them and may get some good first hand experience.
