Default ls2 timing chain slack

I bought a new ls2 timing chain setup and it seem like there is a lot of slack in it. I found a thread where people went back and forth some use it some dont. Is this normal? My block is drilled for a tensioner but it did not come with one. any ideas?

If block is drilled for the tensioner I would get one if you're gonna turn some high rpms. Also check your cam/crank gear for worn teeth. Mine had a little slack but so did my other low mileage engine so I ran with it and has been ok this far for 5k miles.

people forget that there is going to be alot of slack on it with it just sitting there, once it is in motion it tightens up. Actually if you just turn the motor over by hand just a bump of a turn and then check the chain, all the slack will be gone

The ls1 gears are thinner than ls2 ones. I usually prefer to change to ls2 set of gears with chain change and that tightens it a little.

Use the ls2 dampner, takes some customizing to fit right.

I just bolted up the Trickflow Bracket that allows ya to use the LS2 dampener to my LQ9, it's a nice piece but I thought it would've put some tension on the chain, seems like if the dampener (oem LS2) was a little wider it would eliminate
all the slack..but i'm know engineer. I guess it does keep the chain from "whipping" under load though.?

I replaced the crank timing gear last night with the one from my ls2 kit. The chain feels a little tighter, but no much difference.

By far the most important application for the t-chain dampener is road racing as the engine sees extended periods of time in the 3000-4000 rpm range and there are some wicked harmonics created by the engine in that rpm range that kill t-chains ,,,,,,,,,,,having said that it will provide peace of mind if nothing else .

So you saying if I do a lot of 30 40 mph rolls put 1 in what about strip maybe a handful of times a year? I.can tear the water pump and timing cover back off no prob but I don't really do to many roll starts
