Default How to remove surface rust from a camshaft?

I have a cam that's been boxed up for a long time. I looked at it the other day and there is some light rust on the journals.

What can I use to remove the rust/oxidation without damaging the cam?

Very fine sandpaper?

Try Coke Cola. No joke, it can make a rusty nail shine again. Just soak in in coke untill the rust is gone, then cover it in engine oil.

At most I'd use a Scotch Brite green pad with NO pressure. Just lightly rubbing it.

We used very fine sandpaper along with WD40 as lubricant on my friends cam. We used VERY light pressure and made sure there was plenty of WD40 on the cam. Don't worry if all of it doesn't come off. A few minutes of engine run time will take care of the rest.
