stick to LSx specific articles, theres a lot of differences between them and traditional motors. Im building my own 408 from scratch including file fitting my rings as well. I've done some of the work on seperate jobs before but never a total start to finish. So far it hasnt been bad, ive got 3 different books and a multitutde of online articles and links on here.
Obviously though, let the machine shop do any machine work dont try that part yourself.

those videos are what inspired me to start my build almost 2 years ago, good stuff! Anyone can build a short block that is willing to spend the time and learn.
There are a few LS specific things to know (direction of main caps, #3 thrust bearing, torque sequences, etc.), but they are well documented on this site.
Joseph Potak's book was also instrumental in completing my build successfully.
