Default LS6 cam in a 5.3 is it worth doing?

I have a 2001 5.3 that I'm putting into a 1953 chevy Belair with a 200r4 and 3.90 gears. I have a stock set of 852 heads and I plan to install a dual plane intake with a 650 to 750 carb. This is mostly for crusing but I wanted a liitle more than the stock truck cam. Will the LS6 cam work and would the pistons need to be flycut. I plan on putting LS6 springs and pushrods.

No fly cutting would be necessary. It would be a good upgrade over stock if you can get it fairly cheap. All you would need is a ls6 cam and ls6 springs. All could be had for under $150 if you look around, probable even cheaper. As long as you don't expect like 50 HP it's a good upgrade.

Actually an Ls6 cam in a 2000 truck motor may be good for 50hp. The 2000 truck cams were the smallest of the LS family if memory serves. The Ls6 cam will be a good upgrade NA and if you throw some N2O or bost at it later it will still work well.

Ls6 cam is only good for around 25-35 HP, which is still good for how cheap you can get them.

the ls6 cam from 02 and up is a nice upgrade for factory driveability and more top end mid range power.

but theres always the "oh i shoulda went bigger" , when you could install something like a COMP cams XR265HR which is very mild cam still safely usable with ls6 springs , but will give you a much nicer gain if your gonna do the work anyway thats what i would do
