Default What is Break In Oil?

I have doing some research on break in oil; specifically Royal Purple.

Is break in oil, just oil with additives suitable for a safe break in or does it actually promote and cause wear more so than normal conventional oil?

This sparked my curiosity because I noticed Edelbrock's oil states not to run it longer than 500 miles and Royal Purple states 2500 miles...

So is break in oil in reality..Bad for the engine if you run it too long?

Dunno about continued use, but break in oil tends to be a bit thicker and helps everything be properly broken in, and normally has zinc additives and some others

Yea, if its just SAE 10W-30 with additives, should be be an issue. It would be like running Vr1 or something. The mile restriction sparks my curiosity tho.

It may have too many additives to run long term. Possibly making deposits??

Its an oil that has Zinc and phosphorus in it, supposed to protect the cam & valve train from premature wear ,plus i think it has friction modifiers to help the rings seat in properly and quicker..Not sure about the ls based motor but the old school chevys motors small block and big block will wipe a cam lobe quick if not broken in properly.....

The last thing you want is thicker break in oil.

Thin oil moves quicker and will remove debris faster if there is any. you want things to get the oil and plenty of it.

The additives are good even in a ls engine. It is not just for non roller cams

Anyone have any clue why it would have a mileage restriction?

The HPS Synthetic I plan to put in later has the same Zinc and Phosphorous levels.

I'm on the fence to keep running it or time to swap to Synthetic. So far the engine has about 250ish miles in it.

I would assume that the zinc additive would be harmful to O2 Sensors & Catalytic Converters.
