Checking measurments
Hi Guys,
Got my heads pulled off and just about ready to check my PTV to see how much I can mill of my heads to up my compression a little more.
My question is when I pulled the heads it is the factory graphite head gasket and when I put the heads back on I am using GM MLS gaskets. When I measure my PTV can I just throw the used graphite one on there just for measuring purposes or is there a height difference between the graphite and MLS gasket or a reason I shouldnt be using the used one for measuring purposes???
I really dont want to use my new MLS one and even torque it down just a little bit for measuring... as it may be fine but I do not want to even give it the opportunity to be compromised at all.

put the old gaskets back on to check for PTV. Not sure if there is a difference in thickness in the two gaskets, if so make a note and add/subtract the proper amount from your findings.
Just add the thickness of your new gasket. Just bolt the head down with no gasket and when you take it back off and get your measurement, add the .052 or whatever thickness you have. Odds are that your measurement isin't going to be close enough for the difference in the gasket being crushed to matter. Good luck!
