Default Cam help

Just bought a low mile 4.8 engine & transmission for my daily driver 2wd crew cab S10. Mileage is my primary concern as I drive 100 per day to & from work. Texas Speed said use a stock cam. Was wondering if a pullout cam from another engine could get the same mileage & more power. Anybody have any experience in this area? Any help appreciated as this is my first LS build. Thanks

Ls6 cam would be a good small upgrade, won't give much power but it will give a little, nothing like a aftermarket cam though.

Any cam that will add noticeable power will lower your mileage. Can't have the best of both worlds lol. I'd just leave it stock

IMO, a small cam shouldn't hurt the fuel economy with a good tune.
Put a Howards #190315-14 cam in it (210/214 114lsa+4, lift is .595"/ .598", or just about any of the 212/218 cams available in the 112-114 lsa range would also work good!
FYI, Gear size will be a factor in fuel mileage.

If you decide against a cam then at least put a good flowing exhaust on it, and make sure you're also getting the coolest possible air into the intake.

You could put ported heads, high-flow exhaust, and intake, and you'd gain power and MPG.

Get ported 5.3L heads, 1-3/4" headers, HF cats, and a CAI. You'd be looking at maybe 2k in parts. Swap the LS6 cam while you're at it. It'll gain you MPG and probably a solid 50HP with a tune.
