If you are going with a cam in the 22x duration you should really get a bigger stall, for sure. Otherwise, your truck will likely be a bit of a dog until you really hit the power band and by that time your friends will be 2 lengths ahead of you.

I would really only run an ls6 can if you ran it a bracket that limited you to factory parts....lol for all the money and time for a cam swap I want to easily feel the difference before and after.

As long as you get valve springs that can handle the higher lift anything under .600" is pretty maintainance free... Once you go over .600" lift is when you really need to keep an eye on things and check/test springs every 10,000 miles or so.

Also like Paul said, I'd do a stall, or do both can and stall, but I would not do a cam without a higher stall.
