Default LS6 Head Porting & RWHP help...

I've just aquired a stock set of LS6 heads. I'm planning on having them ported and larger valves put in them. What type of rwhp will they be worth over Good flowing Staqe I LS1 heads (280in. 210ex. @.600) and what type of flow numbers should I demand from these LS6 heads after the porting has been finished?

M6, LT headers, the works AFA bolt-ons.

As I have been told the LS6 heads will flow about 325 CFM @ .650 lift and 315-320 CFM @ .600 on a 3.9 bore. Also, it all depends on the flow bench.

Anyway, you should pick up about 15-20 more RWHP with a ported S2 LS6 heads over S2 LS1 heads.

Hrm, maybe I'll have to try and see!

jmx, I am in the process of getting my LS6 heads! We will see how they do with my new cam

BTW, I raced a 600 rwhp Supra (as so they claimed), I had 100 Shot and left him in the dust! (I made 571 rwhp and 747 rwtq with 100 N2O)

I am planning on a 200 shot soon!

Unfortunately, I'll bet that jmX will be and I'll be disappointed. I don't want to put a new cam in it since this one's only 2 months old. Lift is .567/.571 and I don't know if I'd be taking advantage of the the extra flow with this cam. Maybe I'll sell these and get a set of S2 5.3's from TEA. Seems like there's lots of guys making the additional 25rwhp I'm searching for w/heads.

I'm beginning to think I'm dreaming with my quest of 25/25 rwhp/rwtq with heads.

Thanks guys.

Ryan, just give me a call. We've had lots of guys pick up that amount of horsepower. I'm sure I can work something out with you that get you what you want.

if the 5.3's flowed 300 @ .600 lift and they picked up the hp you are looking for why would the LS6 heads ported that flow 315-320 @ .600 not be better? Did I miss something?

IMO stay with the LS6 heads, that is what I plan on doing. But it also depends on the compression ratio that you want. If you want a higher compression ratio go with the 5.3's.

pewter99SS, I agree 100%

All the heads porters that I talked to said that the LS6 heads will make more power! Including TEA! But it is pricey! That is all!!!

Yes, the LS6 Heads cost more, but the heads not only provide more flow and horsepower, but also it is my understanding it provides more torque. Just my 5 cents.

There doesn't seem to be a down side to the LS6 heads except the price.

Here is an idea for you on 2002 LS6 flow,I just picked mine up.This is with 2.02/1.60 Ferrara valves
lift stock ported
.400 248 265
.500 276 296
.525 279 300
.550 284 303
.575 285 310

Exhaust stock ported
.400 164 184
.500 173 197
.550 176 200
Intake volume stock=215cc ported=221cc
Exhaust volume stock=78cc ported=82cc

This was done on the same bench at 28" intake and 25" exhaust.Got them shaved for 11.2-1 compression.Hope this helps with your decision.
The porting was done by LS1derfull

LS6 heads in stock form flow 285cfm? On my bench LS1 heads only flow around 240. That's a tremendous difference. And is that with the stock 2002 valves?

When I purchased mine, I was told they were slightly better on a moderately cammed 346 CI setups(meaning 5 rwhp). Where they really shine is on a big cam and/or big bore setup (15-20 rwhp). I bought LS6 heads because of that possibility as well as being able to keep my stock heads.

I have LS6 MTI stage II heads w/ 10.5:1 compression (stock). It has a 6 spd, C1 cam w/ all the bolt ons. With the stock rear end it made 423 rwhp (SAE). At the track w/ 4.10s it runs better than most head/cam cars, especially the trap speeds.

Jimmy, my stage 2 TEA 5.3L heads flowed 300 at .600 on the intake, and 266 on exhaust. With a higher lift cam(not sure what you're running) 25rwhp will be a snap. Not to mention, you'll save some big time $$$ over the ported LS6 heads.

On my SF-400 flow bench stock LS1 heads peak at approx 225 CFM (.400-.450" lift)and LS6 heads at 250 CFM (.500-.550" lift).

After doing a bit more research, I'm REALLY confused! It seems the LS6 heads would be the way to go if I want more torque & hp if they're ported. I know the TEA 5.3's are getting a lot of great results but since I already have the LS6 heads whats the disadvantage to just porting these? They should make as much or even more power than the 5.3's from TEA no?
