Default Pulling the Engine for a Heads & Cam Swap?

I was told by a shop that they would have to pull the engine to do a Heads & Cam swap. What is the norm? I was quoted $1800 labor if I supply everything. Is there a parts list anywhere that I can use as a guideline to what I would need to provide to a shop for the swap? Should I change the Oil Pump, Lifters, Rockers..etc?? The engine has 102,000 plus miles. I should just buy an effen crate motor & be done with it.

no need to pull the engine out.. thats ludicrous..

just pull the radiator and move the AC condenser out of the way when you take out the cam.

LS1howto.com has a step by step with pictures on doing a cam swap

We have never pulled an engine to do a heads/cam swap. 1800 is a lot of money to be spending on h/c lol, I would try to find another shop, preferably one that is LS specific. As far as the oil pump, lifters and rockers, it isn't a bad idea to get new lifters and put an oil pump in while you are there if you have the extra money to do so. We have had customers re-use stock lifters and oil pumps without issues but with the engine all ready that far apart, it is no extra effort to change them. I would also consider upgrading to an LS2 timing chain.

Thanks Ethan & Majestic. I am still kicking this all around. I am not sure if I am going to do this.
