Torque converter!
The issue is if the transmission goes, it will sent debris into the torque converter. Then you have to have it repaired as well.
Far as cooling yes you have to stop an automatic tranny from overheating BUT that said modern converters don't build that much heat and a tranny does need to be operated warm at least, over 160 anyway. I have a modest size aftermarket cooler in place of the factory cooler and I have more trouble keeping the tranny warm enough don't think I have ever seen it go over 195.
