When to upgrade connecting rod bolts?
Katech's distort the bore too. They are playing with fire suggesting that machine work is not required. However, their bolts are significantly more expensive. Let's have fun with numbers k? Product A $80, no liability for engine damage. Product B $180, still an $80 part but with a $100 premium added in to include a disclaimer of "never fails". Now say you sell 100 of each with a probable failure rate of 3%. Product A has $8000. Product B has $18000 but must cover 3 documented failures. They promise a new short block @$2k for buyer non-dislosure. 3 engines totaling 6k leaves them with $12k. Win for product B. Think outside the box gentlemen.

You're also assuming the rod bolts cost us less than $80. Not even close.

Tenths matter in the shortblock. If small things like temperature, assembly technique, and torque sequence have an effect on your measurements, you can say with confidence that changing the hardware will also - even stock replacement hardware. Leaving it to faith that your clearances will be fine is not the right way to build an engine, let alone one that you plan to lean on.
The truth is that a good percentage of our fellow hobbiests are not as mechanically inclined as some of the rest of us. Fractured caps require some attention to detail. I didn't resize with ARP's and never had an problem. I don't see how Katechs bolts are mystical. I gotta say 01ssreda4 is right about everything but possibly the price...
