Default Head package

Ok so I'm still doing some research but it seems to be a close race between AFR heads and TF Gen-x heads.. What is everyone's thought?? Hp gain difference?? Reliability ? I'm looking at the 215 or 210 range heads

Those are both really nice heads. Not sure which ones would be better. I guess it might depend if they are just out of the box, or ported, who ported them, etc....

allgoodz28, I had the very same dilemma to too long ago. I called up Brian Tooley Racing and spoke with Brian himself. Might I add that he is one heck of a great guy. I ended going with the TFS the he recommended. I also bought a fast 102 from, and had him to port it to match my new heads as well as custom ground cam. Now if I only could get it in the car!!!

I would suggest that you give Brian a call IMO there is no one better out there.

How can you possibly ask a question about "what heads" without saying anything anything about how you intend to use them?

Flip the LS1 and find a 6.0l if you want that much rwhp in a heavy truck.

No way I would be looking at an LS1 for possible blower use later the iron blocks are a much better place to start, though I wouldn't go trying for 480rwhp NA with a 5.3 I would use a 5.3l for later boost over an LS1.

if you get trick flow heads talk to Brain Tooley or the guys at vengeance racing ,or the guys at EPS cams.if you get a AFR talk to Tony Mamo .also consider the Texas speed PRC 225 cast heads .they are 13* ,and use stock GM rockers .

I'm going with the Texas speed as cast 225s and trunion upgrade to my rockers for $1800... But if your set on afr/trick flow, everyone I asked and everywhere I researched pointed twards the TFS hands down.. Then you'll need aftermarket rockers and pushrods to match easily cost you an extra grand over prc heads

Then you haven't been paying attention EVERYONE says bronze guides and stock rockers is valveguide damage in progress.

That is one of the big pluses with the Trickflow is several vendors will put PM guides in them for a modest fee saving the large cost and valvetrain stability issues that come with roller rockers.

Honestly if you thought you could use stock rockers with the bronze guides in aftermarket heads then put this project off a few more months because you are apparently not doing any meaningful research yet.

Good point, it is such common knowledge I didn't even think to post it. Bronze guides are so soft the mild sideloading the flat tip on the stock rockers put on the valve will quickly wear out the bronze guide. The "solution" to such is often considered to be aftermarket rockers which include roller tips which cost a lot of money and are heavier and harder to control thereby causing you to spend even more on say titanium retainers, larger diameter stiffer pushrods and heavier springs. Costs spiral out of control fast for something that is more of a pretend upgrade over CNC'd OEM casting than a real one. At least the Trickflows some vendors offer an option of Powdered Metal guides which is the stock guide material,
