Default What is this sensor *see pic*

I was changing my alternator and I noticed that this sensor was loose. It seems to have come loose from the end (it has actually broke off the connector end). It is on the drivers side head towards the front. The problem seems to be that it doesn't start when disconnected. I am not understanding what it is doing or why it won't start when it is disconnected. It appears to keep running if it comes loose while it is running though? Is that normal? Also, is this something the normal parts store will carry?

Great, thanks. I figured that what it was. I just wasn't expecting it to keep the car from starting with it unplugged. I will get it replaced tomorrow.

$7.10 from rock auto if you don't need it immediately and can wait a few days for it to arrive.

I couldn't find it on rock auto, what is it called? I searched for Coolant temperature sensor and it only came back with the Coolant Temperature Sensor Connector. Since it is keeping my car from starting half the time, I might just pick it up at the auto parts store.

Found it. It was under: Temperature Sender / Sensor if anyone else ever needed it.
