Default 799 head porting?

i found a set of 799 heads, is it worth the money to take it to a machine shop and have them ported or just bolt them on and go with them? and should i have them surfaced before using them?

I've been researching this heavily. Is it worth it? AI claims 35-45 hp over stock 243/799 and it comes out to about $37/hp gain. That includes resurfacing, valve job, springs, pushrods and gasket.
A straight 241 to 799 swap is about 10-15 hp. So if your going from stock 241 to ported 799, I was told to expect 45-55 hp gain.

is that cnc porting? and with that kind of difference i would think its worth it before putting them on. i know to replace the head gaskets and bolts but is anything else needed to swap these or should anything else be done at the time? also which head gasket should be used?

what chamber volume would u go with? also would i need my car tuned if i just put these on? im also going to do a cam but that might be down the road whenever funds allow. so for now i would like to put these on until i get my cam, would that be alright?

Standard volume, surface milling will drop about 1cc and bump CR slightly. These claims are regardless of cam. Tuning is always ideal, but I will let more experienced say whether needed at this stage. After cam, absolutely. They could recommend cam per you wants so not as to worry about P2V without fly cutting.

"porting" is a relative term, someone not familiar with a casting might ruin it, others as said can make it deliver 45hp and everything in between.
Just something to consider before you consider some random local shop even if they have a good reputation.

if im going to get them ported id send them to AI as everywhere ive read there the place to go to for porting, ive read mixed comments about them with cams though. all i have right now is slp lid, LS7 clutch, short throw shifter, long tube headers 3" exhaust with magnaflow bullet muffler, and fast fuel rails. my goals are 450+hp trying to get as close as i can to 500hp with it being reliable and streetable so if anyone can recommend a cam i would appreciate it. i believe i just picked up tr5 plugs and im reading i need tr55? im new to the LS world so any advice is appreciated

either have them ported or it's not worth pulling the heads unless you have to do it anyway to replace lifters

by the time you do bolts, gaskets, fluids, surfacing, and tune you will be out a lot of money for the hp gains

Having used AI's LT1 products if I ever get around to playing with my truck it will be AI's products I put on the 5.3l or 6.0l if I swap one in.

On the plugs, the TR5 is just a TR55 with a smaller factory gap, open the gap carefully and you can use them.

I would agree with the poster saying I would port heads if doing to work to swap.
