Default 5.3 question

I have been looking for a complete engine for a budget build and i came across a 5.3.

I called the seller and spoke to him about it. he says his friend pulled it out of his 2006 silverado to put in a 6L. This guy has never pulled the engine apart, it has been sitting in his garage for a while and he is selling it.

After i had him take a look at a few things for me(it is 3 hours away from me), he told me the head gasket tab says 4.8 and it has flat top pistons. According to his friend, he changed the pistons to flat top to increase compression and had some extra gaskets lying around and it happened to be a 4.8 gasket.

I am finding this hard to believe, but i understand that there is a way to check based on the crankshaft, can anyone shed some light on that?

To distinguishing between the two. If you have crank casting numbers ending in 216 and rods ending in 143, then you have a 5.3. If, however, your iron-block motor is sporting a 482 crank and 121 rods, then you have a 4.8. One thing is that if he lied to you about one thing then you can't really take anything else as a fact.

Thank you very much, that is exactly what i was looking for.

After talking to the guy i don't think he is lying to me, i think he really doesn't know and is relying on what his friend is telling him(i have no idea if his friend is lying).

Ill ask him to pull the pan and take a pic of the Crank Casting Number for me

So, it turned out to be a 4.8, I went ahead and bought it anyway to do a turbo build.

Same for me as well, but I'll be putting a whole bunch of juice to it.
