Default L33 questions

Hey guys, first post here. Building a fox body, doing a 5.3 swap. I picked up was from my understanding is an L33, it was a 5.3 HO motor. ALu block, flat tops. Got it with everything from oil pan to wiring harness, minus heads and cam, for $150.

I was told it came out of an 06/07 truck, anyway to verify this? I will be taking it to the machine shop for a hone and new cam bearings, I plan on just doing a stock rebuild and slapping a turbo on it(big surprise, I know).

The main bearings I picked up are Sealed Power #7298MA, and the rod bearings are Sealed Power #82555a, trying to use stockish parts as I get a silly discount through NAPA(we have a GAINT corporate account). Are these the correct bearings? I was going off an 2006 avalanche but I can return them if need be.

And also, from my understand, this L33, everything will interchange besides pistons from LS1 stuff? I was going to do 317 heads with maybe an LS6 intake although I heard the LQ4/9s flow damn well and are dirt cheap.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as this is my first venture into the LS world.

The newer model engines should have the knock sensors in the sides of the block and a 1pc 58x reluctor wheel on the back of the crank. There should only be one length of the 11mm head bolts, where the older engines had longer bolts in the uppermost out corners.

L33 is very much the same as the LS1/6. At least through 06 which mine is.
24X, knock sensors under the valley etc.
Gen four rods. 243/799 heads even.

Have no clue about those bearings.

Heres a really crappy pic of the crank

I dont see any spots in the valley where a knock sensor would go?

Basically I am trying to get an idea of if this block is DoD or what year to tell the parts guys when looking stuff up?

I also have the complete wiring harness out of this truck, only thing that looks cut is where the OBD plug goes, any idea of what this is worth?

Those two posts in the valley are for the knock sensors.

That is not a DOD block

Crank wheel looks just like mine and should be 24x

Looks like a Gen III block, like pre 2004. The two posts in the valley are where the knock sensors thread, the big hole behind them are for a rear cam sensor. The later model engines used a cam sensor in the front cover, and knock sensors in the sides.

Now check and see if any of the larger 11mm head bolt holes are deeper than others.

The head bolts are all the same length.

Technically, it is a late Gen 3 block.
They have the good Gen 4 rods.

That is a L33. They were gen III blocks with, as you found out, knock sensors in the valley. They have the 24x reluctor and the upgraded rods found in the 04+, gen IV engines and HO LQ motors. It is probably an '06 but I believe a few of them found their way into '07 classic trucks. Great engines and very stout. The head bolts are just 2 lengths (small and large), all the large bolts are the same length as opposed to earlier offerings with 3 different lengths. The block was based off the LS6 architecture also.

I'm not to fimilar with LS stuff but it's my understanding that any cam will work with this block? So either an LS1 cam or an LS6 cam will be fine?

What head gaskets will I need to use with 317heads? The LQ4 gaskets I am assuming?

Aside from all new bearings, what rings would be recommended?

Thanks for the help, coming from Ford motors it seems I got a lot to learn here.

Most turbo guys use the MLS GM LS9 supercharged head gaskets. I used the MLS LS1 gaskets. Oh well.

And yes, any LS 3 bolt cam fits. LS1/2/6

You know I'm pissed that you found that for $150......
:-)

I'd like a spare

Yea I am excited about it. Looks like I can maybe sell this truck intake and the wiring harness hopefully and break even on it.

Any recommendations on piston rings? Should I just call up the dealer and re-order some stockers or will the sealed power ones be ok?

I re-used the stockers.
The OEM rings are good. But expensive. More than your engine I think.

Others will have to comment on other than GM

I've used Hastings rings with pretty good success. Last one made 650whp through a 4L80e in a truck. Ring set was like $50.

My machine shop said the same thing about the Hastings. I know I can get the Sealed Power ones for $55, they are like $120 on RockAuto. But sometimes the higher prices doesnt always mean a better product
