Default lq4 build for mud truck

Hey guys I just dropped in the intro section to say hi.
So far what I have is an lq4 at the machine shop I'm staying standerd bore stock crank stock rods. I did order lq9 pistons, I have a pair of 862 heads and a pair of 317 heads. For a cam I'm wanting to go 230s 240s low 600 lift. What I'm wanting to ask most is if I use the 317 I want to get them down in the 65cc chamber size can I mill them enough without fly cutting? I'm going to attempt my own porting and will be flowed after I'm done
My goal is 500 crank HP and over 400 ft from 3500-5000

Sounds like a cool build. Is flycutting an option for you at all? If so, you could really maximize compression which will yield more HP/TQ across the board.

I'm not sure to be honest. I'd say that nearly everyone who flycuts does so with the pistons in the bore. I'm sure it can be done disassembled though.

It's easier to flycut out of the engine. Take the pistons to a machine shop and let them do it... though you may want to mock up your heads to the block and put the piston in there to make sure the valves are centered correctly on the piston. If the machine shop has everything, they can do that too.

What do you guys think would be a safe depth to fly cut being as I haven't decided on cam yet. Once I've got my final cr I'll decide cam but I'm worried the flat tops might cut me back on my duration if I don't fly cut. I want to say I read somewhere on here just recently .080 is a good number for intake and .060 for exhaust

I wouldn't recommend fly cutting more than that. If you fly cut .080 and .060, you should be able to run a huge cam and be fine.

Why not use the 862 heads?

That's what I originally thought of doing but everything I read kept saying buy 243 or stick with 317. Now in my opinion the 3/4 of a point I'd gain with 61 cc chambers on the 862 is worth the 13 cfm the 862s loose

I agree, except I think you'll gain more than 3/4 of a point. I calculated 10.2:1 with the 72cc chambers in the 317 heads and 11.5:1 with the 61cc chambers in the 862 heads.

I would also suggest having a valve job cut in the 862's and swapping in the larger valves from the 317 heads and picking up some flow as well.

I'm sure it can be done disassembled though.
