Doing a cam yesterday, and while using the comp cams valve spring tool, I managed to pull the first 3ish threads from 1 cylinder using the bolts supplied, wich are way too short. I chased theads, and was able to torque the bolts down to 22ftlbs without harm. Would it be a good idea to throw some red lock tight on it, or even some jb weld to ensure a good hold? Or should I not even worry about it since I was able to torque them anyway? Thanks!

Sidenote, this is a 4.8l in a 2006 gmc Sierra with a tsp220r cam.

 

If it were mine, would install a helicoil. The threads may hold as is & they may not hold. If you have enough thread engagement equal in length to the diameter of the bolt or longer, the threads should hold.

Helicoil it and forget about it. Have a buddy hold a shop vacuum right next to the drill and tap process.

 

If it were only the top three threads and you got to 22 lb-ft, the bolt will never see any more force than applied by the preload obtained with the 22 lb-ft so you should be OK. Loctite will not cover lack of thread shear area so that won't help at all.

 

were you using the rocker pedestal with the valve spring compressor? Ive seen it done without it and it bends the **** out of the bolts.

 

I used the pedestal with the tool, I don't see how you could use it without it. Anyway, I just ran some red Loctite, and torqued them down to the 22ftlbs. Ran it about 15 miles (only up to about 3k max), all it well for now! Thanks for the input guys!
