Noticed a leak between engine and bell housing... any Ideas? I know very vague, but this car has been nothing but dry underneath, leak started after 5runs at the drag strip Car is an 01 ws6 , auto |
First determine what type of fluid it is. It's most likely oil and most likely the rear engine seal. Second possibility is transmission fluid, and that would probably be a leak around the front of the transmission. Are you sure it is coming from between the engine and bellhousing? Leaked fluids get slung all over and the bottom of the bellhousing is a low point that can catch a lot of stuff that might have otherwise ended up on the ground. There should be an inspection plate on the front/bottom of the bellhousing that you can remove to look inside. |

If it's clear it's more than likely clutch fluid from a leaking slave. Check the clutch reservoir |
Good call! Forgot about hydraulic clutch. |
Sadly bad clutch slaves are very common and although cheap are a PITA to replace |
Would be amazing if it had a slave leak being that the first post says it's an auto... |
^ Lol |
I wasn't trying to be mean just pointing it out. Reading the whole post is important. I think that's how a lot of bad info gets spread around. Just to add some info I've had bad valve cover gaskets leak enough to drop oil around the bell housing area. So be sure to check every where around the back of the engine for leaks. |
Whoops. Yep. I read it right on my first reply..then replied to the reply. Oh well. OP can still check to make sure nobody snuck in a third pedal down there. ;) |
Well what was it? |
If it was the clutch, you'd notice pretty quickly it wasn't working right. Have you been needing to add oil? How many miles on this car? |
A steam line could have sprung a leak also. |
I've also seen oil pressure sensor and valley cover leaks look like they are coming from the rear main. |

Also take a look at the valve cover gaskets. I had the passengers side leaking at the rear corner and running down the back of the block. I had initially thought it was a rear main. Valve cover seal was hard as a rock. |
