Default Question on rod side clearances

I just installed my callies crank and compstar rods and noticed that the #1 and #2 and #7 and #8 rods move almost to none side to side ( just by feel ) compared to #3,4,5 and 6 which moves quite a bit more. nothing has been torqued down and rods move freely on the pins. Is this a common problem ?

Mine were all around .0016 side to side. Tsp forged 408 rotating assembly.

Make sure the rods are racing the right way. There should be a bevel around the bearing bore which should face away from the other rod and toward the crank cheek.

Yes I do, both sides are beveled , a large and small size and I have the large bevel side facing the crank. Like I said, its only on the ends of the crank

bearings don't come cloes enough to the edges. Ive had #1 piston in before, playing with cam timing ( trying to teach this old dog new tricks ) and had no movement problems as far as movement on the crank. It does have very little movement just nothing like #3,4,5, and 6

And you're sure the upper and lower bearing shells aren't mixed? The sides will hang up on the radius of the crank journal if they're mixed up.

Guessing the Compstar being the budget Callie's probably has .125" radii and not the .140" of stronger higher dollar cranks. If bearing shells are correct then a simple vernier caliper inside cheek to cheek measurement of looser throws compared to tighter throws. Checking if the crank was inconsistently ground. Either a quality cheek re-dressing or rod big end thrust touch up on a belt sander....looking for between .006" and .015" side clearance with .020" being an absolute maximum.

If the bearings check out correctly then yes, the belt sander comes out.

Yea .016. Tsp told me .016 to .020 was where they ended up usually.

Cool, glad you got it figured out. I know I can't say I haven't done that once or twice on accident.
