Degree cam with heads on ???

I can't find any write ups on this...
Does anyone know if I can degree the cam in with the heads on by simply putting the dial indicator plunger on the push rod?
If I do it this way there is no need to buy the light weight valve springs for checking correct?
This is just a Gen III 6.0L BTW
But I would really like to save the LS-9 head gaskets by not pulling the heads..
If anyone has any pics of how they mounted their dial indicator to the aluminum stock 317 style heads that would be great!

Yes you can degree it in that way. Just make sure the dial indicator and the pushrod are straight inline. I have a magnetic dial inticator, so i just stuck it to the top of the block,where the valley cover goes.
