Default advice on ls1 rebuild

Wanting to rebuild the ls1 that has 216, xxx miles on it.
The car will be used for weekend duty. It will never see a track or a drag strip.
I'm not interested in a big bore kit, boosting it, or spraying it.
I will likely spend most of my budget on rebuilding the heads.

What I'm looking for are low cost parts or a low cost rebuild kit

For comparison, I just rebuilt my 5.7 hemi with a master kit I bought for just about $700 shipped. I saw somewhere online they wanted about $700 just for f'ing pistons....

So, with all that said. ...

anyone know where I can locate a kit or parts for a rebuild?

Thanks

What kind of HP are you looking to get out of it?

You can get all the gaskets, bearings, and rings from Texas Speed. Great customer service.

Idk. 400ish

And $500 for just a top and bottom gasket kit isn't exactly what I call low cost...

Welcome to LS1 engines, I don't think the words rebuild and low cost go together in the same sentence. You should try buying parts for them in Australia if you think that's bad, at least you don't have to deal with a crap exchange rate and shipping from the US.

A mate of mine spent around $6K including paying the builder on a freshen up with basically no high end parts, a fairly moderate port job on 853 heads and it already had a Comp cam in it. Good luck with your goals for low cost, I genuinely hope you can achieve it.

Best wishes,
Jason.

I've been searching the Internet and have found several complete master kits for around $700.... The main cost will be the valve job. Since there isn't anything wrong with the block I'm hoping all it will need is cleaned up, honed, freeze plugs, and cam bearings from them.
I'll do all the clearance checks and assembly myself - shop labor isn't anything I'm interested in paying.
I'll bet I can rebuild the motor for less than 2 grand.
If I had a second block I'd just buy forged parts a little at a time...

Finally got around to getting with the machine shop that did all the work I needed on my 5.7 hemi rebuild.
Vat cleaning, cylinder hone, freeze plugs, and cam bearings - $240
Valve job - $225 plus parts
Crank polish - $50
Rings, bearings, and gaskets - $140

Sooooo.... $655 for a basic rebuild

I'll be adding a new oil pump, timing set, and.....
I know I've read there are other parts I should replace....
Rockers, pushrods, new rod bolts, head bolts.....

Any recommendations on other parts I should replace??
