Crank rubbing on block? Picture inside

Installing a cam on a junk yard motor.. pulled the front cover off and noticed this

There are grooves in the crank like it has been rubbing on the front of the block.

Is this engine bad?

The thrust bearings at the least are bad. It would be in line for a tear down and rebuild IMHO.

Turn it over, does it feel like it's contacting?

The crank sometimes has groves like that from the factory machining. It's probably nothing to worry about, but you may want to check the end play as well just to be sure.

Agreed, GM cranks don't have a great finish.

Thanks guys! yeah I pulled the plan and checked out the other parts of the crank and they had the same grooves. Man I almost had a heart attack for a second...
