Default rod honing/line honing

fixing to tear into the 02 ls1,was wondering if i could install stock rod bearings, and main bearings along with stock gm bolts.. everything looks near perfect.. but i heard when installing new bolts and torqing to spec the rod bores and main bores become out of round. and require honing and a thicker bearing,,especially with arp hardware.. is this true ? or could i install all gm fasteners and torque to spec and be good? (with all new standard size bearings)?

It depends, it seems to be a little different for everyone. I just put the ARP Pro Series bolts in a set of LS3 rods and they really weren't that bad at all, but they ended up a little big so I resized them anyways. I've never had a problem with the stock bolts though. Always perfectly round and within spec each time I've reused the stock bolts.

Thanx, I'm a little iffy on this but I know I can do it properly, but your saying that if I go with stock bearings and stock fasteners. ..I'll be ok? Crank and rods look really good...I don't want premature bearing failure tho!

I don't know about stock bearings, the clearances from GM can be pretty tight from the factory, but the housing bore should be fine.

Recently I've seen where the bore housing gets distorted even using the factory bolts. You could actually change the out of roundness by a few tenths depending on whether you went 15 then 75 or 85 degrees. Another factor which seemed to make it close to stock round as well as continued repeatability, was to put oil on the threads, extreme pressure lube under the bolt head, and 75 degrees. In this instance the vertical measurement would be tight by 2 to 3 tenths and would only need just a few strokes on the hone mandrel to perfect, yet NOT need the 2 over bearings.

Ok well I think I'll go for it and assemble the bottom end and see how it feels,, gonna go with stock piston rings also..that should only require a light hone??

Just got my stock rod assemblies back from being checked with ARP bolts. 7 were within specs but one fell way out so it was replaced with a stock one that the shop had on hand. This way they didn't have to be resized due to just one rod.
