I'd take an aftermarket LS3 head or small bore LS7 if I had a 4.005 bore or better though.
Hey Doctor.... A buddies of mine that no longer post on the site cause of personal problems had a 402ci with LS3 heads, hi rise intake in his 6 speed WS6 put down 530 rwhp.... well he decided to do a head swap and swap to a serious cathedral port head with a FAST intake... car still put down a little more (545 rwhp) which doesn't sound like that much of a gain but in the real world the head swap was worth 4 tenths in the quarter mile.

If the OP go the 408 route he might as well do it right the first time around. Those impalas are not light cars so he'll be way better off with a top shelf cathedral head to get that weight moving. Sure LS3 heads are capable of horsepower but Torque is what makes a car fun to drive and just gets in the power vans without hesitation. LS3 heads don't really start working till around 3500-4500 rpm. On the last post on this thread I made I just laid the truth out on the table......

I already have a 3800 stall and 3.73 gears but I might take the stall down a 3200-3600 because I want a more streetable car. I'm really considering the TFS 235 though

Get whichever you want...iron or aluminum.

But as far as 100 pounds changing ANYTHING at all for a STREET driven car....it makes ZERO difference. I cannot feel the tiniest little difference in STREET DRIVING. I drive aggressively and I drive normally. ZERO difference in all aspects of driving.

If you are competing in a road course with a purpose built car.....sure. Trying to shave every 10th of a second with a drag car....yeah sure, go aluminum.

Aggressive street driving.....ZERO difference.

....oh....my dry traction is identical from a dig or from a roll.

370 here with a pretty simple setup and put down solid numbers. I am running a lightweight battery and took some weight off the front end.
