As these engines generally run on electronic fuel injection, the computer (PCM it's called) has two sensors that tells it where the crankshaft is in the 720 degrees of the four stroke rotation.
The crankshaft sensor tells the PCM where it is and the cam sensor tells it which of the four cycles the engine is in.
BOTH sensors are needed so the PCM knows which fuel injector AND spark plug to fire at the exact correct moment.

Another thing you need to know is this engine has a 24x crankshaft reluctor ring and the camshaft is 1x.
