I have an 02 5.3 swapped into an 86 c10. Is there a way that I can run an ls9 cam in my engine? My cam sensor is at the rear of engine and the cam needs one in the timing cover.

It is possible but it really isn't worth the trouble or the money. It will be cheaper to get a cam made for your 5.3.

I'm trying to understand why you would want to. LS9 cam is designed for boost. Maybe you're planning boost, maybe not. The effort is normally more expensive than the parts. You'd be better off with a cam designed to work with what you have. Then, it just goes in and works. Get a tune and on your way.

i am new to the ls engines. the machinist that done my block and heads told me that was a good cam. I bought it put it in and now the motor is in my truck. it runs perfectly, but from time to time it is very hard to start, because it is not seeing a signal from the cam sensor. now it will extremely difficult to change cams, so I was hoping there was a way to make what I have work

just my thinking, my truck runs flawlessly and cranks great 90% of the time. there should be a way to do away with the cam sensor? or tune that sensor out of the computer

I don't know enough about tuning to answer that. I would doubt you could tune out the cam sensor, but I could be wrong

Welcome to LS1tech!

As these engines generally run on electronic fuel injection, the computer (PCM it's called) has two sensors that tells it where the crankshaft is in the 720 degrees of the four stroke rotation.

The crankshaft sensor tells the PCM where it is and the cam sensor tells it which of the four cycles the engine is in.

BOTH sensors are needed so the PCM knows which fuel injector AND spark plug to fire at the exact correct moment.

Contact one of our fine sponsors listed on the right of this page to get the correct camshaft for your genIII engine.

Another thing you need to know is this engine has a 24x crankshaft reluctor ring and the camshaft is 1x.
