Question Stock rods bluish after pin install

It seems the morons in the local machine shop torched the rods while installing piston pins. There is some bluish color around the pin area. Are they garbage now without question ?

uuuhhhhh...That's how you install press fit pins. Of course, it is possible to get them too hot.

Wait...Do you mean they actually used a torch instead of a rod heater?

It seems they may have used a torch. They are bluish in color now around piston pin area. In Helms manual it is said not to heat over 315Celsius which is also the point of changing color.

Are you concerned that the rods are now junk? I would say they would be fine to use in a moderate power setup. Really no way to tell though.

Yes, I'm concerned if I can use them anymore. I would like to spin around 6600... TR224, S2 heads...

Well if they are junk my 383 sbc(built to make around 550 fwhp) that I just built is junk too. I have never seen a set of press fit rods that HAVEN'T been heated and I recall all of them having a blueish looking color.

Sure they need to be heated, but in oven, and if they change color at least some of the strength is gone. What's the experience on LS1 rods ?

I've seen torch heated rods bend in a LT1 stock rod setup... within only a few miles.

What is the heat used for? I am not understanding why they need to be heated in the first place.

the pin ends only are put in a heater to expand the hole so the pin will slide in. then as it cools, the rod will shrink over the pin. if you were to try and press the pin onto the rod, the piston will most likely crack from the pressure. i used to work in a machine shop. pressing the pins off the pistons, the pistons would crack. the ends are heated to 500*F. sometimes, if they let them sit a little too long in the pot, the blueing occurs. i've ran 200 hp n2o on cast pistons and stock rods heated, with neither of them breaking.

That is perfectly normal discoloring. Don't lose any sleep over it.
here's a heat color chart- they did not get that hot.
