Default HELP-1998 trans am CAM swap

Hey guys I have a automatic 98 T/A has SLP Lid and Bellow Ported MAF SLP Longtube Headers with a Dynomax bullet dumped after the 3" Y pipe and soon to have 3.73 gears I was wondering what cam and spring swap can I do that's not as aggressive as the hot cam kit but maybe in the same price range $400-500 and still have that mean sound but not the drivability idle issues I hear with the hot cam and yes a tune after the install is in order the tune shop is about 25-30 Mins away from my house

It's going to be hard to achieve that mean choppy sound with something even milder than the hot cam

If you can't afford using the proper pieces, wait until you get the money to buy everything you need. A cam isn't a piece you replace "on the cheap"

Usually the mean sounding cams are the ones that will give you the most drive-ability issues. Another worth mentioning, if you get an aggressive enough cam you will probably want a higher stall which will easily be $400+ just for the converter. IMO I would get the gears first and a stall (once again depending on the cam and over all goals). Once that is set up then move to the cam.

I don't want an aggressive cam I want one a little bigger then stock like the hot cam is perfect for stock ls1 engines with stock rods lifters and rockers the hot cam kit comes wit ls6 springs and everything drops right in place of the old stock parts ls1's come stock with beefy enough rods lifters and rockers for a hot cam kit swap

I realize you are not wanting an aggressive cam but to get "that mean sound" you are going to have to get something other than a hot cam. A friend of mine recently installed a hot cam and it doesn't sound stock but at the same time doesn't have that choppy/mean sound. Just my two cents.

If you're going to swap a cam for a choppy idle but still want stock drivability, retard your idle timing and reduce your idle speed. it'll chop all you want.

If you want to do a cam swap, do it right. If you don't want to screw with springs and such, cam motion makes drop in cams that do quite well and work with the stock valve train.

how would a Stage 2 cam motion drop in cam work it says a lifter/spring change is recommended but what if I just upgrade to ls6 springs and keep the stock lifters the car only had one owner I don't believe it was beat on although it does have 113k miles but its clean

If the cam is not to aggressive, simple drop in without having to change anything, then you can run it without a tune. The ECU will be able to compensate but in the end a tune is always the best way to got about it.

Yes, you can install that cam with stock lifters and run quite well without a tune. I've seen guys post larger duration numbers than that running on the stock tune.

I'm not sure if you will be able to use the LS1 springs or if you'll need the LS6 springs. At 113K, it makes sense to do the LS6 springs, and they are normally pretty cheap for a set.

I think that cam makes a very sensible choice for your goals and budget. Keep in mind you will need front cover gasket, water pump gaskets, a new crank bolt, and some other assorted items, so it will still run more $$ than only the cam price.
