Default ls1 started knocking so time to rebuild

Hey guys so my 99 z28 started knocking today, so it's time to rebuild. I'm on a budget of about 1200 at the moment to fix the bottom end. I don't want to go back stock but idk what to choose from. I'm new to engine building, but I want to rebuild from the bottom up. Starting with crank and work my way up. So what's a good setup that not too expensive I want to put about 3000 in the engine all together. My goal is about 500hp to the wheels. What's your input? Thanks guys

I'm going with a 408 from livernois. About 8-9k after I'm done. Should be close to or over 500hp

I got a quote for a rebuild at 3500, 408 block from livernois is 3800. Run stock top end with a mild cam you might come close

Default came to a decision

I came to a decision to take my z28 off the road for awhile and give her the build I want her to have. I have a v6 camaro that needs intake gaskets 😢😩so she is going to be my new dd while the z undergoes surgery for awhile.

Same here, put her down for the rest of the year. Build it right the first time!

I remember when I had my 408 short block built it was around $3500.

Bought the LQ4 short block for $500. Bought the TSP stroker kit for $2k, and then machine work, balancing, bearings, etc...was $1k. So $3500 I had a stout short block to run. I was going to just put the stock 243 heads and LS6 intake on. With the mild cam I had, I was projecting around 460-480rwhp. You can always add the top-end later down the road.
