Default compression check

I think I know the answer but I want some other opinions. I have a LM7 engine, with the heads off, that I want to use right away but, I am low on funds and don't know the conditions of the rings and heads of this engine. everything looks good to my eye but I'm no professional engine builder. I have all the components, available to use and run this engine right away. what are some ways to ensure the engine in the proper, running condition? the cylinder walls are smooth to the touch. all the pistons have combustion grit. there is no rust or markings in the cylinder bores. all markings and grit can be easily wiped away, except for the top of the piston's, combustion grit. please ls1tech brothers, I'm asking for your help. I was told by a friend, to pour gasoline, in the cylinder bores, and see how long it takes for the gasoline to leak out. if it takes longer than a 5 minutes, the rings are sealing properly. thanks in advance clark.

I suggest using an old set of head gaskets and bolts. Hook up your starter and compression gauge. Check each cylinder both for cranking compression and leak down. You'll have your answer.
