Default 5.3 Crank and Cam questions.

I have a spare 4.8 shortblock I'm going to be using on my turbo build after melting a piston on my 5.3

The 5.3 will be going to the machine shop, probably getting opened up to a 5.7, then getting forged internals. But it will be a slow build as money doesn't grow on trees where I live.

My question is can I use the 5.3 crank is the 4.8 block? Is there any advantage? I read that the 5.3 crank is the same as the 6.0 crank?

Next question, the cam I pulled out of the 5.3 is a .228 .228 .116+3 .588 lift

Will that work good in the 4.8 with stock pistons?

What would you change?

If you put the 5.3 crank in the 4.8 you will now have a 5.3 with flat top pistons with stock heads you will have 10:1 compression. The cam will work a little better with the compression bump assuming you had dish pistons in your 5.3. The 5.3,5.7 and 6.0 have the same crank where the 4.8 has less stroke.

A 5.3 crank and rods in a 4.8 block will give you a 5.3. You are going to need the rods to match the 5.3 crank, or you are going to need custom pistons.

A 5.3 with flattop pistons and 61cc heads will be at about 10.5:1, which is a nice compression to have for a street motor. I honestly would spend money on a cam that is better suited for the smaller displacement.

^^^ This ^^^

4.8L stroke is 3.267", 5.3L stroke is 3.622. On your 4.8, at TDC, the piston sticks out right at .006" above the deck. If you swap the crank and nothing else, your piston sticks out .183". Might cause a problem or two

Thanks guys. I don't plan on swapping pistons at this time. With that said, I'll just use the 4.8 crank. Someone is interested in buying the 5.3 crank. What would it be worth?
