Default looking to upgrade.

I recently bought a 2000 z28 m6. It has a mild build but i wamt a bit more out of it. I definitely want to put a cam in it and the rest is undecided. The only things i know forsure that are done to it is heads, air lid, intake, long tubes, ory, catback, tubual lower control arms, sub frame connectors and short throw shifter. The rest the guy i bought it from said they previous owner did. I would like to get the car around 450-500hp but it has to retain drivability because its a sunday cruising car amd will be driven a couple hundred miles. Id like to stay under 3k but may spend more. I attached pics of the mod list.

Without going up in cubes only think left to do is port the heads, fast 92/102 and a cam.... don't go crazy on the cam if you want to retain the same drivability.... Brian @ Briantooleyracing or martin @ tick performance would be the top choices for cam input

As much as I hate to admit it - I did do heads only first with a stock cam mainly because of CA emissions. The car drove stock except at top end where I noticed the difference at highway speeds.

I did a lot of research on the cam to pair it with the head specs with the help of Martin@Tick. Purchased and then installed the cam.

Ended up being the best thing I did and just love my set up for a real sleeper.

I guess I never thought of it through an emissions standpoint lol, but that makes some sense in your case.

If you want good drive ability with that kind of power, you should call tony mamo. He's got some stuff on here hitting those kinds of numbers with moderate cams and phenomenal heads. You'll pay for them, but that's because they're worth it.

He can match up a cam and heads for you that'll give you what you are looking for.

Martin and Brian are excellent cam gods, so not taking anything away, but on a set of 799's you'll be pushing it.

799 are very good factory heads. Same as the 243 heads. To get into the 450-500 range at the wheels - especially with good drive ability- they would need significant porting.

If you're willing to sacrifice driveability, get a much bigger cam and call it a day.

If you want it to drive more stock-ish with that kind of power, spend the money for really good aftermarket heads

Well said ^^^ with heads you can go with a mild cam and still gain power and drivability. You can get a big cam and stay with stock heads but again it depends on your goals, drivability or if you need to pass emissions. It all depends on your circumstances.

3k budget is going to be tough for a small cam build. I would think a nice set of heads with every single bolt on you can think of, then get a cam spec'ed.

Want the best? Mamo motor sports. Plan in $2600 range. Want something more reasonable? Send your 799's out to AI for porting. Or to TEA or PRC. Want something in between? Dart, trick flow, or Patriot for around $1800. Also, check the classified forum for deals.
