I'm sure it's been asked, but what does it take to run an LS3 cam in an LS1. I'm getting my hands on a LS3 cam, springs, and rods dirt cheap and want to swap the heart out of the LS1. I know I need a gen 4 timing cover and harness extension. Also need the right cam gear.
Will an LS2 cam gear work?

You would need all the stuff you mentioned along with an ls3 cam gear that had 1 bolt instead of the 3. After buying the cam and then all that stuff you need you're not too far off than a budget can package from a sponsor.... I'd personally go that route, make a bunch more power and keep the same street manners.
With the ls3 can you're looking at a gain of 15-20whp. That just isn't worth it

The LS3 cam has no reluctor...
you have to use the LS2 x1 cam sprocket and a CMP harness extension (which you have to verify is pinned correctly).
You also need a front cover.

It would be cheaper to ask someone to just grind you a gen3 cam with LS3 specs. Even if you got the cam for free, you might break even with buying one made for a gen3
But then for the installation effort, there are better cams.
