Default 383 ls1 running on stock cam??

Im on a budget and as of right now only have the money to build my bottom end. I would like to stroke my 2001 ls1 to 383. My block has 125k miles on it. Can i use the same block? Can i use the stock cam for now?and who makes the best kit?

Yes to both the block and cam question, but if on a budget why do a stroker?

Gotcha! Check out places like Texas Speed and Thompson Motorsports. I went with TMS myself and couldn't be happier

Thanks man ! Hopefully my build goes as planned. My A4 transmission needs a rebuild so might as well through in a 3200 stall .

Just stop right now before you waste what little money you have. Being budget limited is a reason to be more careful and thorough in your research.

Displacement is the most expensive way to add HP but the first thing newbs think of.

If the current engine is damaged then MAYBE a stroker as a repair is worth otherwise it is just a poor idea. Even if the current engine is damaged I would do a 5.3l with ported heads before a stroker with stock unported heads and cam.

100% of the air coming and going moves through the heads as controlled by the cam, much better gains per dollar to be had there when starting from stock.

This is aside from the fact a "built" NA motor should have the compression raised which might not work real well with the stock cam, which leads to not raising the compression properly and further compromising an already bad idea.

So might as well do a heads/cam combo instead ? With ported 243 and headers

This topic has been hit many times before

The abridged version.....airflow determines horsepower.

Horsepower is what we want to increase if we want to accelerate with more authority (not torque although torque feels good down in the lower RPM....what you want is both but HP trumps torque if we are discussing accelerating.....not pulling a motorhome behind your pick up).

A larger displacement engine with the same lungs/airflow (aka stock heads and cam) will feel great on the bottom and fall on its face as the engine RPM's. It will be very disappointing. Larger engines have a larger appetite for air and have to be "fed" accordingly.

If you dont have the funds to do both better to work on the top half of your stock displacement engine that directly effects its breathing ability.....your car will be alot quicker if you do.

Good luck....save longer if you need and buy the best parts you can afford....another good piece of advice or you will end up doing it twice like countless others (spending more than the guys that did it right the first time....wait....wasn't saving money the objective!??)

Enjoy the process....have fun

-Tony

Anything worth doing is worth doing well. Build it right the first time....its alot cheaper than building it twice!!

Good call man, or just hold off. There's also plenty of guys selling stuff in the for sale section if you're trying to save money. That's where I get at least half of my stuff.
