I normally suck at documenting these things and then get mad when I didn't do it. Here's hoping the thread keeps me honest.

MMS 220's still in the box. Should have come in green and red wrapping paper

Top view. The first thing I noticed about these was the size of the pedestals and the lack of razor sharp edges around the surfaces. Yes, folks, you do NOT need a battle suit to handle these heads and avoid looking like you were mauled by a cougar. Note these are 2015 AFR castings, part number 1710

Plenty of room to exhale on these things

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...545c28be0a.jpg
And also plenty of room to inhale. No breathing through a straw on these babies

And more viewing material for your next one-handed trip to the bathroom (or wherever)

Here is where you really start to see the level of detail. I kept the camera low to show the whole port, and you can STILL see most of the intake valve. If I took the picture from the rafters of the cathedral, you can see almost all of it. Straight shot to the combustion chamber from the manifold

Here's a shot looking up at the roof so you can see the rocker boss on the right and how much contour went into the intake guides

Deck view.

One last shot to show the bowls There isn't a sharp transition anywhere. All nice and buttery smooth.

So, once the lifters and rockers arrive, I'll be able to start the tear down and get the measurements for the pushrods and then start reassembly. Hopefully in the next week or two

Nice!

The Kooks duals are awesome btw. They are loud but you won't have a restriction with them.

Very nice parts list and I am very much looking forward to the results. One question though. What made you go with such a large intake to exhaust split on the cam as Tony usually goes with a 4-6 degree split.

Darth_V8r Jul 20, 2015 08:00 PM

Good question. I had three reasons. First, my exhaust isn't duals, and the merge pipe isn't the best so I wanted more duration to compensate. Second, I wanted to stay in the 227 range, because I tend to see that as the sweet spot. Diminishing returns above that point - you start giving up more for less gains. Third, I wanted the overlap to try to carry power past peak without giving up too much down low.

When I was picking it out, I couldn't decide between the tick SNS2 or the cam motion Titan 4. I knew I wanted to stay near 227, because I paid attention to Tony's builds. Kip split the difference on the valve events and this is what he arrived at. It's a great cam. Even on a BBK intake and mildly ported stock heads, it pulls very hard and carries to 6800 rpm. Has great partial throttle response

Hope that answers the question.

Yes that absolutely answers my question and it's very hard to beat a 224-228 duration intake lobe on a 346 cube motor in a street application.

Very nice. Glad you got a build thread started. Looking forward to seeing how this combo stacks up.

Sounds like you are going to have one bad@$$ ride once this is all said and done. Subscribing to this.

So based on the second picture, they are AFR castings, but with a custom CNC port job that Tony created? Obviously his hand port work on your heads too, but you can see the "AFR" casted into the heads in that second picture.

Could you share more info about the MR2 electric power steering?
Very interested about the potential to use for my C5.
Thanks

Yeah, Tony mentioned in his other thread that they are AFR castings. They carry a lifetime warranty, since they are AFR castings. What I can't answer to is if they are an off the shelf existing AFR like the 215 or if they are a proprietary casting Tony designed and has exclusive rights to, but contracts with AFR to do the actual castings. He will probably chime in on this thread eventually and if he does, he can answer that one.

I remember Tony making a comment about "out of the box MMS 220" vs mamofied, so I'm thinking they are a proprietary 220cc casting and the rest of it was the mamofication. You can't see from the pics as well as you can in person, but there were places the tooling didn't touch.

The 1992 Toyota MR2 was a factory electric/hydraulic power steering system. small electric motor driving the pump (think Maziere-esque). With some custom hydraulic hose work, you can mate the MR2 pump to the rack and pinion and take the load off the crankshaft.

You could also use the 2013 Nissan Altima pump, but the servo motor they use makes this annoying whine. The MR2 was quiet.

Should free up more than the maziere water pump, since the fluid is more viscous and under higher pressure.

JakeFusion Jul 21, 2015 03:36 PM

Turn One pumps also free up HP... I think like 7HP. Or you could just goto a manual rack and build your guns.

I didn't know that. If a better engine driven pump is worth 7, how much is the entire load worth? Close to 20?
