Default Local Head Porting options?

Hey guys, just a quick question concerning head porting options in Mobile AL. I want to say there is an engine builder locally, "David's machine shop", but I am not sure he machines heads.

Any I should probably also mention what the goals are and what heads I am talking about.

Currently I have a 2000 Camaro SS SLP A4 with just under 96000 miles. I purchased some bare 799 cast heads a few weeks ago for a steal. I want to reach around 450whp through the A4 which shouldn't be to difficult with a good H/C set up. Forgot to mention, I will be running an LS6 intake.

So if any of you guys know someone in mobile that is good let me know.

450 Rw in a A4? Good luck with that.

Care to explain why not. There are plenty of people here who have made that power through an A4. I realize it is not a walk in the park but the the right H/C set up it is feasible. I don't plan on spinning the car to high heavens either. If I recall the LS6 intake peaks around 6200 RPMs (could be mistaken).

I wouldn't be so focused on a cetain dyno number, but rather how it performs in the real world

In the real world you are correct. I realize good track times are going to require better suspension than stock. Having power is one thing but putting it down is another. I just want to that kind of power but each dyno will read differently, luckily for me I have a dyno shop close to where live.

If your looking for a certain horsepower number out of an auto you might be butthurt. And im not sure about plenty, ive been here ten years and I cant remember the last auto heads cam car that put down 450 rwhp and I doubt it will get there w/ porting a set of stock casting. If you want dyno numbers swap over to a 6 spd, then 450 should be very doable.

There are definitely a few H/C/I cars out there with 450rhwp. I don't think a lot of them are running 243's though. A set of MMS, AFR or TFS heads would be a better option. I have no problems with people who want a dyno number for bragging rights, we all build our cars for different reasons.

Because you're looking at GM ported castings with an LS6 intake. Not saying those can't put down good numbers, but when looking for that kind of power out of a 346 with an auto you might want to consider some better components.

Aftermarket CNC heads with a FAST 92 or 102 will get you there with a decent cam. Gonna be tough without.

I have a ls2 with mid size cam, ported 799s, FAST 90, and dual exhaust that made 418rwhp unlocked through a Yank 3600 and 12 bolt.

I was happy with that.

450rwhp through an auto isn't as easy as LS1tech posts might make you believe. Look how many AFR, TFS, or PRC aftermarket headed engines are barely getting to that point.

FWIW basically the same cam and setup only a little less head porting and a ls1 (instead of ls2) made 389rwhp unlocked in my car. Ran 11.6@116mph on a 1.7 60ft in a 3700lb car in 1000ft DA. 1/8th was 7.45@94mph.

I have heard good things about David's Machine Shop but have never been there. If you go, tell us what he offers. My guess is that he can do a competent valve job but maybe not a performance valve job. Meaning 30/45/60 angles instead of 37/45/67. I'm guessing he could mill to a smooth enough finish to use a MLS gasket.
What do your friends at Atmore and Irvington say ?

To be quite honest I don't know anyone that races at Irvington and I have never been to the track in Atmore. In fact, I haven't been to the track in a while (about 2 years).

Last time I went I had a Hyundai that I hadn't really modded at the time. It was definitely fun though but having a slipping clutch made for abysmally slow times.

I agree with everyone else. Getting 450 rwhp out of a stock cube LS1 with an automatic, GM casting heads, and an LS6 intake is highly unlikely. Not to say that a couple people haven't done it before but they went to great lengths crossing every T and dotting every I. It would have been easier and cheaper to have done it with the right components such as aftermarket heads, ported 102, and the rest of the supporting mods needed.

Instead of going to a local shop that may or may not know how to port LS style heads you might look into sending them out to us for porting. Everything here is CNC machined on a 5 axis machine, receive a 5 angle valve job, and are milled to spec. After that we then hand blend the bowls. Here is a link to our site and pricing. http://texas-speed.com/p-1172-prc-cn...-castings.aspx.

If you have any questions give us a call.

There have been plenty of A4 cars hit 440-450whp with stock castings. All you have to do is lock the converter on the dyno. Unlocked well no, not so easy.

Bo White is in Vance, AL. I know he ports heads, but I don't know if he's set up to do the machine work (decking, valve job, etc.).
