5.7 timing chain slop effect timing ?

5.7 timing chain slop effect timing ? I do not have timing dampeners on my block.
I put the timing marks as I've read on here. (6 o'clock/12 o'clock)
Just kinda sketched out with out the dampeners. And wondering if im at all off a tooth?
I've got the car running one time since install. It ran extremely rough.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

If you're off a tooth it's very obvious and that's not. That little bit of chain slop shouldn't make it run poorly. After all you can advance or retard a cam 2-4* just to move your power band. That said from the looks of that motor I'd throw a new timing set and chain on there.
I can tell you a long, sordid story about cam timing gone awry.
The short version is I never found out if the cam was off or the timing set was off, but replacing both corrected my issue. A Cloyes 3220 LS2 timing set is ~$40, much stronger than the stock ls1 set, and very good insurance that the timing issue is not chain or gear related.
Typically if you are reinstalling a chain, you've swapped the cam. If so, did you happen to degree the cam?

that amount of play is what its supposed to have . chain dampeners are only needed if you're road racing or the engine is spending alot of time in the 3000-3800 rpm range as those rpm's create a frequency harmonic that causes chain breakeage over some time . you're engine running rough is something else like lifters that arent pumped up yet or debris in intake or ?
