Easy?
Hello friends, I am going through a period where I cannot stop looking at a 4th gen F-body and C5 vettes. I am really considering buying one. A big factor in car buying for me is the easiness to work on. I've seen a lot of engine bay shots on both LT1 and LS1 cars and they all look really crammed in the car. They don't look easy to work on at all. it looks like they would be hard to do anything on, be it changing plugs or putting a cam in or bolting on a set of headers. I'm the type of guy who likes space to work on my cars, because I usually replace the entire exhaust system, change heads, cams, intake manifolds, etc. I have also looked into the 04-06 GTOs as well. the engine bay looks bigger, but so does the engine. so would they be any easier to work on? so I'm just wondering how hard is it to work on a C5 corvette or 4th Gen car or GTO? any info would be appreciated.
Changing #8 plug and wire, yeah it can be kind of a pain. Just take the coil pack off and it'll make life so much easier. Changing the cam isn't any harder than others I've changed inside the car really. The intake is pretty easy to take off as long as you have a little patience with the rear bolts, which really aren't bad. Headers aren't really that bad on it as long as you get the car high enough in the air so you can put them in almost straight up and down through the bottom.
I'm not saying it's not cramped in some places, or that it's the ideal setup. But I think once you figure out a few ways to do the things that give people problems on it, that's it's not a world different than any other car. Could some things be easier and make you let some f bombs fly? yep lol But overall I don't think it's a deal breaker for me.
Edit: talking about an fbody ls1, I can't speak for the other two.

To be honest, I prefer a cam swap on the LS1 to many other platforms. Headers can be a pain. Sure, the rear sparks are a pain the first time, but once you get it, it's not bad. Even the intake. First time you'll come out looking like your arms got mauled by a cougar. The four-legged kind. After doing it once, you can pull the intake in pretty short order
Cylinder heads under that cowl was tough the first time, but the second time was pretty smooth sailing.
Clutches are pretty good. I can drop the tranny with hand tools and a floor jack in two hours.
In general, the gasket system is very good. Don't have to do tons of scraping for the most part.
PCV leaves a lot to be desired.
The jobs that are surprisingly tough?
-oil pan gasket
-oil pump o ring

LS1 is definitely easier to work on then LT1's, Fbodys aren't fun w/ either seeing half the motor tucked under the column. I haven't done any of my C5 work lol but it looks be to be pretty straight forward.
You're in luck, I've had the privilege of working on all three of these cars. GTO is the easiest to work on. Dimension wise, it's the same size engine as the Fbody and C5.
Second easiest is the Fbody. It looks crammed in there, but the only difficult thing to reach is the oil pressure sensor. You have to use a special tool and work blind to remove it.
Corvette looks like it has room, but believe me when I say that it doesn't.

You'll definitely need your jacksyands though, and my car is lowered so I use those rhino ramps once in a while too. They don't give you alot of room underneath, but you can do an oil change and stuff like that. I've even messed with my adj rear end components with it up on that ramps.
I have worked on a few different vehicles but only the f body that you have listed. I've worked on some older cars with friends with tons of room but they also have less amenities. No power steering, no abs, no computers, very little wiring. I feel like working on f bodies is fairly easy now but I have had one or two for quite awhile now. I feel like the ease of working on these cars comes with working on them and reading this forum so you find out the easier ways to do things. You can find almost anything on this forum and find multiple ways of people doing stuff right and wrong. Like everybody stated above, spark plugs are difficult if you don't know what angle to go at them. Same with headers, etc. I have tons of room to work on my 99 fbody but I have also eliminated a lot of the amenities lol. Good luck with your choice. They are all great choices in my opinion!
gto's are easy peasy to work on. plenty O room to work on the engine.
hardest thing on those would be the oil pan gasket and the driver side
header install. otherwise, piece of cake.
i've worked on a catfish, and main issue there, like stated, is half the
engine is under the cowl.. which sucks... but manageable.

Never done any work on a GTO but I think the LS1 F-bodies are pretty simple to work on. This is especially true once you get all of the emissions stuff out of there ( egr, airpump) and all of the associated hoses. Going to an LS6 pcv system makes it even easier and cleaner. Once all that crap is out of the way it's really not that bad from the stand point that pretty much everything can reasonably be done with hand tools, jack stands, and ramps. Some stuff is tight up under the cowl but once you learn the right angles and tricks it's really not so bad. The only vette that I have wrenched on was a C5. Much tougher if you don't have access to a lift, which I don't. Any vehicle with an LS is way simpler to work on than an LT IMO.
Compared to FWD cars, the F-Body is easy. Compared to just about any other RWD car, it's a nightmare. I've pulled my motor, replaced the radiator, done headers, swapped manifolds, changed plugs, etc etc. The cowl is a huge piece of **** in the way of everything.
