VIN help
I have a 98 LS1 in an offroad buggy I have been building, I bought a bunch of the parts from a guy who is a "friend of a friend". it is running now and I need to bring it to the CHP office to have a VIN number put on the chassis. I am told they will look at the engine and determine if it is a stolen engine or not before they issue the VIN. I know the engine is a 98 because it is an aluminum block and it has the 98 style ECM. I was told that the previous owner bought it from a "sketchy part of oakland" and I dont want my rig impounded. is there any way to tell if the engine is stolen, or what the VIN of the car it came out of is????
You can find the vin with a tuning software for the pcm. I could be wrong but i don't think the LS1's have any #'s stamped on them to show which car they go with like the old classic cars. I know my 5.3 has no numbers to prove what vin it went with.
All engines still have the VIN engraved on the. It is engraved vertically the driver's side above the oil filter. Right by the bell housing mount surface. It should have the last 9 digits of the VIN. I know any GM dealer can get the entire VIN from the last 8 digits. I can actually do it if you can read the numbers.
As far as checking if it's "hot", I believe you would have to go through law enforcement for that.
Let me know if I can help.
