Default Double cam gear settings?

I bought a double cam chain assembly and the part that slips over the crank is labeled with 0 and multiple advance and retard options i can go with. What should i go with? Building turbo 5.3 1000hp and not very familiar with timing. Help would be appreciated

With your cam your should have got a cam card with the set up specs on it.
Look at these videos (or similiar) as to what to do
or

I feel it is imperative that a cam is timed in correctly,I know many would disagree.

I agree. I always degree my cam, even in the car.

Stock length bolts are fine. The gear itself isn't really thicker where the cam bolts up, it just has an extra row around the gear for the double roller chain.

That's good but they're not making it easy on you. I like the Comp cam cards as there's more info and it's easier to discern, once you know what you're looking at that is.

So you can see that the IVO is in degrees BTDC and IVC in degrees ABDC, EVO BBDC and EVC ATDC. This makes sense when looking at the degree wheel:

What's not listed on your card is the ICL and whether there is any advance ground into it. To degree the cam you're really looking to see that the ICL matches the card. So in the case of the comp cam card listed above, it says "these specs are for the cam installed with the ICL @ 116' (BTDC). So you'd find the measured ICL and see if it matches the card. If it comes in at say 118' then it's two degrees retarded due to chain slack and/or machining tolerance errors in the timing set or cam grind. So you'd take everything off and put the crank gear on A2 and re-measure everything again to make sure.

Since your card doesn't list the ICL you can easily calculate it. IVO is -1 (+1 BTDC) and the duration is 224. So take half the duration (112) and add it to the -1 and you get 111. this is assuming no advance is ground in. I just like the card telling me where the ICL should be rather than deriving it.

You can buy everything you need for $65 off summit... that's including the deck strep to find TDC with the heads off, it would be a little cheaper with the heads on (around $60).

Optional checker springs will make it a little easier if you want to find PTV clearances or decide to degree the cam with the heads on:
