Default cylinder head confusion

hey guys,

one of the intake valves recently decided to break off and wedge into the head. long story short, i need a new head.

My car is a 2002 camaro with 243 casting heads, however, i have no idea if they are from a 5.3 or a 5.7. Since the combustion cambers are slightly different between the two, how can i tell them apart?

Im assuming it would be bad run miss matching heads, one from 5.3 and 5.7

any info would be great, also if anyone is selling a 243 head, pm me please

thanks!

and before anyone says it, yes I've looking into getting the head repaired, however, the hat wedged deep into the intake and punched into the water jacket, both seats are warped, and the spark plug hole is warped/bent/out of shape. so ya its repairable but not really cost effective and would sketch me out with the possibility of breaking and damaging more parts

Default 243

I think the only way to make sure what head you have is to measure ( or wiegh ) a valve. The ls6 243 have the light weight valves that are a little longer IIRC

A 243 casting is a 243 casting. There are no differences between the 5.3 and 5.7 version in the actual casting itself

^^^Correct. 243s are the same either way. The only difference is in the valve.

Why not take the bad situation and upgrade. I can get you in a set of CNC ported 67CC Chamber 317s that will pick you up 40+HP from your stock ones for $1099 a pair assembled. Give me a call if I can help.
Thank you,
Kyle

ok so the difference is the valves. somewhere else on here i read that the cc of the chamber was slightly different. guess not.

found this:
GM numbers:

Stock LS2/1 etc. solid valves --intake 99 grams exhaust 86 grams
Stock LS6 lightweight valves --intake 76 grams exhaust 63 grams

thanks for the info

The LS1 didn't originally come with 243 heads. Maybe you're confusing the 243 vs 241 heads?

Kyle, you should list the heads on your website. This way people could see the specs on the heads, LS1 and LS3 offerings. You should show specs, valves sizes, flow, springs, etc. Just a thought....

Can I get them with a different size chamber?
I'm still digging around for an affordable 300 CFM head.

In this instance, the Thompson heads may be better suited depending on what all comes with them for $1100 assembled, especially if I can opt for a slightly larger chamber.

This is considering I could sell the 243 heads I have now with PAC springs for ~500 local and only have $600 or so in a head upgrade. That's $200 cheaper than having my 243s worked over by AI.

When you say 'assembled', which springs does that include?

I think a 300 CFM head would pick up a lot of power over a stock 243 on a 5.3 pushing 20+ PSI.
