Local performance shops start @ $800 around here.
I paid for my first cam swap.
I read ls1howto.com and made friends with someone who had done a cam swap already for my second.

I charge $150 for cam and springs. i've done about 30.
I might just have to drive to Texas for a vacation if I decide to do a 3rd!

Default Went to Lamotta's today ....

Talking with the folks at Lamotta's today, in Longwood, Florida (where they did my cam), they were willing to show me that they charged $60.00 per hour. The book time for the cam install came out to $974.00. GM dealerships here charge the same hours and $84.00 an hour. I've researched it pretty thoroughly.

I spoke with Jake Lamotta, the owner. He's a really down-to-earth guy. The original quote (I guess) was for an LT1 cam install. Anyway, I was comfortable with the work they did and it was cheaper than any other place I had found to do the cam, springs, and kit, in the Orlando area. Yeah, it's waaaaay too much, but, the book time accounts for not cutting corners or performing any tricks. It accounts for a timely and accurate cam install. Believe me, if I could have gotten it done right for $200-$500, I would have jumped on it in a heartbeat, but, how many people would guarantee their work for that price? I'm curious.

My friend & I (BLKWS6) on here have done multiple cam/spring swaps. We charge 400.00, and we keep every gasket/rocker arm bolts/crank bolts/etc, on hand to make sure the installation goes as smooth as possible and of course its done in 4.5-5 hrs. We are lucky to have access to a shop and any equipment needed. I believe that is a fair value to someone that doesn't have access to tools or a proper place to do the swap. And with a little notice we could line up a great LS1.edit tuner to get a base line tune in it the same day.

Yeah I stand behind my work for $300 even. I also keep all the gaskets in stock and the oil pump pick up tube O-rings on hand crank bolts ETC... But I haven't done 30 so I know I am not as good as the superbowl cam changer. I think I know about all the short cuts there are and I do believe that you can do one of these in the time you suggest never have I tried to do a fast cam change just no need to get in a hurry it is not going anywhere till I am finished.LOL! But with that said I'll bet you just did cam and springs not oil pump no timming chain ETC...Most people not all want to do all or more than just cam and springs ETC...

If I drive over and have my cam installed by you I can get it tuned right afterwards? Is that on a dyno or just with LS1.edit? Either way, I would do that just for better drivability until I get a dyno tune if I even need one afterwards.

yeah cam and springs in under 3 hours. i did a cam only swap once on my car in just under two hours. but that was before i did them alot.
i've only done one timing chain with a cam swap, all the others have been just your basic cam, springs, retainer and pushrods.
I am not bragging to be the "superbowl cam changer" i just do the work right and do it fast.

I am not picking on you just poking fun.LOL! Like I said I could probably do the same in the time frame just no need to. And I have been doing a lot more than just cam and spring swaps though. SUX2BU if you are ever in the Houston area look me up.

What a coincidence i just talked to a shop today to see what an install for a cam would be and by the 'book' the swap takes 15 hours, and he wanted to charge me $1150 labor WTF. Thats just over $77 an hour that costs more than my kit that im going to get. I guess im doing it myself cuz thats way to much.

No dyno tune but he has a LOT of experience and could put a base tune in it that would be very close!

Not questioning you at all but what spring tool do you use?

Are you an at-home installer, or do you own a shop? I've been looking for a good performance/install shop in Pearland, since I live there and don't always want to make the drive to MTI.

Thanks,

I do and I am right around the corner from you in lake mary. I charge $375.00 for cam and valvespring install, and give a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty against workmanship.I have done countless LS1 heads/cam installs and motor builds, my specialty is actually cylinder head porting for LS1/LT1 cars but I do installs as well, and for the thing's I do I beleive my prices are fair
